Original PHANTASM Filming Location Survives Southern California Fire!

On January 7, 2025, a spark ignited in Eaton Canyon nestled within the picturesque San Gabriel Mountains of Southern California. What began as a seemingly small incident quickly erupted into the devastating Eaton Fire, roaring through nearby communities of Altadena and Pasadena with frightening speed.

By the time firefighters gained control, the blaze had destroyed an astounding 9,400 structures—homes reduced to ashes, beloved schools burnt beyond recognition, and thriving businesses lost overnight. The Eaton Fire etched its grim legacy as the second-most destructive wildfire ever recorded in California, tragically claiming at least 17 lives.

Today, amidst the lingering scars of devastation, communities are banding together in remarkable displays of resilience. Recovery efforts continue, fueled by determined residents and widespread support, as Altadena and its neighbors strive to rebuild their lives from the ruins.

One bright bit of good news: an original Phantasm location survived! The gates of the Hobbs Estate, located at the corner of Lake Avenue and East Loma Alta Drive in Altadena is where scenes from the original Phantasm were filmed with the gates serving as the entrance to the Tall Man’s Morningside Mortuary. Both Mike and Jody entered the graveyard through these gates in the film and the Tall Man’s hearse and the brothers 1971 Plymouth ‘Cuda roared through them as well.

This entrance, although currently closed due to fire reconstruction, serves as the primary gateway to popular hiking trails leading into the San Gabriel Mountains, including the Echo Mountain trail. We have a blog post with more info on the location.

Our friends #grimmlifecollective did a great video on all the locations in PHANTASM here:
