MASTER P Covered the PHANTASM Theme on a Rap Single?!

We did not know MASTER P was a Phantasm Phan!

The PHANTASM theme song has a long history of being sampled and covered in popular music.

As we all know sampling has always been an integral part of hip-hop, allowing producers to dip into music history, reshaping and recontextualizing older songs into brand new sonic experiences. A prime example of this is found in Master P’s track "Pass Me the Green," which smartly samples the eerie and atmospheric "Phantasm Theme." Listen to it below:

Phantasm and its Iconic Theme

PHANTASM’s haunting theme, composed by Fred Myrow and Malcolm Seagrave, stands out due to its chilling synthesizer sequences. The sense of dread it instills was perfect for the film's terrifying tale, making it one of the most memorable horror soundtracks of its time.

When Master P chose to sample this theme in "Pass Me the Green," it was a bold move. By integrating the theme into a hip-hop track, he not only introduced this classic piece to a new generation but also transformed its context. The haunting quality of the "Phantasm Theme" added a layer of depth and moodiness to the track, creating a backdrop that makes the listener feel like they're floating through Master P's lyrical narratives.

Master P in the studio! Wonder if they had just watched PHANTASM!?

The brilliance of this sample lies in the juxtaposition. The song’s theme, as suggested by its title, is far from the horror and dread of "Phantasm." Yet, the spooky undertones provided by the sampled theme lend the track a hypnotic and otherworldly quality. It creates a bridge between two vastly different genres and eras, showcasing the universality of music.

This MONDO vinyl release is long out of print. Would you like to see the PHANTASM soundtrack re-released on vinyl?

Master P's "Pass Me the Green" serves as a testament to the magic that can happen when artists draw from unexpected sources. It reminds us that music, irrespective of its original context, can be reinvented, reinterpreted, and reintroduced in incredibly creative ways.
