Acclaimed writer/director Alex Garland recently called the original PHANTASM an inspiration to him.
If not familiar:
Alex Garland is an acclaimed English novelist, screenwriter, and film director, best known for his contributions to the science fiction and psychological thriller genres. He gained early fame with his debut novel "The Beach" (1996), which was later adapted into a film starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Garland transitioned into screenwriting with the post-apocalyptic horror film "28 Days Later" (2002), directed by Danny Boyle. He made his directorial debut with the highly praised sci-fi film "Ex Machina" (2014), for which he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay. Garland continued his success with the psychological horror film "Annihilation" (2018) and the TV series "Devs" (2020), further establishing himself as a visionary storyteller.
