Reggie Bannister & Phantasm V
For years now, fans have kept an eagle-eye out for soundbytes on Phantasm V’s status. What is interesting in this new interview with Reggie Bannister is that he doesn’t really provide one. Instead, he ruminates on the life of the rumors and anticipation surrounding it. The results are a refreshing read:
“…Phantasm V, when you’re dealing with a picture like this there’s something sort of mystical about it. It has a tendency to garner favor from people that really can’t get enough of it and they just can’t wait for the next one to come out.
But if you look at the history of Phantasm, there were ten years in between the first one and the second one. We did the second and third with universal, so that was a back-to-back deal. Then the next one wasn’t until 1993. It’s an open ended story because it’s life, and it’s the lives of these certain characters that keeps unfolding. You don’t know where they’re going to end up, they don’t know where they’re going to end up, you don’t know where the story is going. And so paradigms like that have a tendency to spawn rumors and hopes. Even if you go on IMDB right now it says that we’re working on a feature as we speak and we tried every way possible.
I mean, I think we all tried. Don tried and I know that we tried to get that rumor quashed because we’re not. I mean, we’d like to be - That would be fun to be working on a feature right now but we’re not working on a feature. So that’s where that’s at. And that’s not to say that that won’t happen, or that won’t happen sooner than later, because I personally think it’s just a matter of time before this movie gets another shot. At least with the characters as they are. I think it’s possible they could make Phantasm films after I’ve croaked and probably after Don has croaked as well. But because the paradigm is so fascinating and truly wonderful, it’s a story of - there’s a lot of love in it. There’s brotherhood, family feeling, and - I don’t know, it’s just a good story.”
A wide range of topics about the genre industry are discussed by Mr. Bannister in his typically thorough manner, so do yourself a favor and check out the full interview @ Deadbolt.

While I was assistant editor of Famous Monsters I had the pleasure of meeting The Tall Man for the first time. He arrived in a regular business suit, wearing eyeglasses and looked nothing at all like The Tall Man. But he was soon trabsformed into the Evil Master of the Silver Sphere and we took lots of pics (which I still have). The funniest thing was - we all went out to lunch with him in full costume - makeup and all! It was a riot as people stared and tried to figure out who WAS this guy?? Well - as we know - it was Rory Guy, aka Angus Scrimm.

I think maybe reggie is wrong when he comment about phantasm films being made long after he and don “croaks”! For me personally, and im sure every true phantasn fan, the story of phantasm is great but the cast is what makes phantasm so special. Its like reggie said ” theres a brotherhood, a family feeling”, if the cast changed by even one member it wouldnt be the same anymore. thats just my personal feeling on it

For my personal opinion i think it ends at Phantasm 4 because how much further can you go. Yea it would be cool to make a Phantasm 5, but what happens if the characters are not in that mood. You can tell Reggie Bannister is in and Don but what about Angus and Michael? Think about it! But Im just a teenager that is letting out my opinion. But thanks Phantasm, you changed my world of silver spheres.

I desperatly want this movie made. I have been a Phan of Phantasm since I was 7 years old. I agree with Jamie Earls above comment about it not being the same without the Phamily of Phantasm. ( Don, Bill, Michael, Reggie, and Angus). But if Phan.4 is to be the last, what a sutile, errie feeling for a ending. Was it a dream, or………
Thank you Don for such a powerful film filled with family, creepiness, death, killer spheres, and an awesome score by The late Mr. Myrow. Always A Phantasm Phan!!!!!!!!!!1

I’m watching the first while I type this response. YOU NEED TO GET STARTED ON NUMBER 5 and get this story back on track. WEVE WAITED LONG ENOUGH, AND SO HAS THE TALL MAN!!

I hope Phantasm V does get made, because I’m curious about what happened when the Ice cream guy went after the tall man? he just dropped into that dimensional portal at the end of the movie phantasm IV. I hope the tall man gets what coming to him in P V. good bye.

Personally, I would not want to see the Phantasm story in the hands of someone other than Don and Company. This is one of the reasons you have to love this guy - he kept control of these films and the direction they took with very little outside influence. It was Don who locked himself away to dream up the first script. It was Angus who created the Tall Man (yeah, I know, Don wrote it but Angus brought him to life). It was Reggie, and always has been, the central character of all of the movies. There’s so many variables at work here that excluding or changing just one would not seem the same. If Don wishes to leave Oblivion as the last movie then I respect that. However, if he ever does decide to do another Phantasm movie, God help anyone that gets between me and the box office!!!

Its time to continue the saga of the Phantasm movies maybe a requim explaining the origins in detail. It would just be awesome to just be able to see the next chapter to the cult favorite.

In august of ‘08, i drove 8hrs to kentucky from georgia to meet the only people in hollywood i have ever cared about meeting, Reggie Bannister and Co. B4 I was at the hotel even 30 sec., Angus Scrimm got off the elevator and made his way over to me (he seen me grinning like an idiot) and talked to me for 10-15min. like we were old friends, what a nice guy. The night topped off for me to hang out w/Regg and Gigi until 3:15am at a party for the horror stars, how cool is that?!! The next day, got autographs. pics and such, then later as i was leaving, Mike Baldwin yells out (we of course had already met, lol) ” let me sign your phantasm shirt!” This shirt is now under plastic of course!

There’s a certain mystical and magical presence within these philms and they easily slip into people’s hearts and minds. I would love to see a fifth philm, but if it doesnt happen that’s ok too. The whole reason i love these films is the unanswered and the enigma of everything. Don has left a lot up in the air for the viewer to decide. We have pondered over and over again what could this mean? These philms(yes i know it’s film) are such a big part of my life and the relationships between the characters are what makes me feel close to everything. They even drink Dos Equis, one of my favorite beers.
Anyways i could go on and on all day but i wont. I simply wanted to say that the phamily of these philms is what’s really important and id rather it stop with the fourth than have anyone else touch it. But if Don and the crew are up for it, then i would pee in my pants when the first trailer came out!!

Phantasm is a real masterpiece. It is the classic of horror. Don’s films make me think that evil can be stopped. The Phantasm plot gives people hope. Once terrorism, violence, nuclear weapons, hunger will disappear. So, I resume – we need Phantasm 5!!!
My idea to Reggie Bannister.
Reggie, Phantasm V can be made in Russia. A lot of snow,
-31 °F in winter, frozen tall man, noone eats ice-cream, it’s awfully cold. With your fowling piece you could tear tall man to pieces in endless Siberian taiga.
Phantasm 5 forever

Here in Russia we eat icecream in winters too…
I’d say: welcome to Russia (Saint-Petersburg) and if there’ll be any questions - just be my guests…
